I found one of my old notebooks during a recent studio cleanup. When I opened it up, I discovered the words “Create More, Make Less” written inside. The notebook is from 2018 and while I don’t remember writing that phrase, I’m very grateful that I did. My work has evolved a lot since then and it’s energizing to think about what I’ll be able to create using this simple phrase as my guide.
I’ve been hard at work in my studio and a lovely collection of new vases has come together in recent weeks. These are forms and ideas that are directly related to my Forming Connection release back in 2022 combined with the glazing pattern from last year's Centerpiece Bowls. I must note, one of my favorite parts of making pots for all of these years is that I get to see the through line of my work both in the near and long-term.
This year I’m giving myself the time to explore ideas more deeply. I’m curious and excited to see how my work evolves with this space. Sometimes my studio work gets resolved quickly, other times it’s a bit longer to figure out what it is that I’m walking towards. No matter what, each piece I make gives me information, momentum, and a fresh vocabulary to keep pushing forward with.
I’ll keep things moving with new work in the studio and the drops will keep coming. Sometimes a drop will look similar to what we’re already familiar with. Other times it may contain three large pieces or perhaps a dozen serving platters.
The rest of the year? I think we’re going to have to sort that out together.
