About The Exhibition

For Vocabularies of Form, Keith Kreeger and Karen Hawkins each created their own body of work working with form and scale to create a cohesive exhibition. They also collaborated on a few very special pieces that combined Karen's Totems made from repurposed books with forms that Keith made especially for this project. These collaborative pieces are available directly through Karen's studio.

Keith Kreeger on Vocabularies of Form

I have been an artist practicing my craft for over thirty years. I strive to make work that is full of life because I believe the objects we surround ourselves with can bring daily joy.

When I close my eyes, I can see the many pieces I've created over the years-forms that have become as much a part of my vocabulary as words themselves. Each new piece builds on this language, which feels increasingly centered on one thing: our commonality.

The objects we surround ourselves with hold the power to connect us across space and time. We look to the artifacts of past civilizations to understand how they lived. These utilitarian and ceremonial vessels once bonded communities together, nourished one another, and stored food for a community's survival. Today, these ideas and forms are no longer created solely to serve our basic needs, yet they still adorn our homes.

The work I create will always be part of the ongoing tradition of my craft and continues to ground me in the shared human experience. a constant reminder that objects hold meaning beyond their surface. I hope my work and the vocabulary held within each piece continues to be present in the conversations guiding us towards a shared future.

Karen Hawkins on Vocabularies of Form

As an artist, I've always been drawn to the stories embedded in the materials we leave behind - paper, fabric, discarded books - remnants of individual lives that, when reassembled, reveal something collective. My practice begins with deconstruction, but it is ultimately about reconstruction: of memory, of meaning, of connection.

This collaboration with Keith has been a chance to explore the space between our materials and processes.

his language of clay and mine of paper are different dialects, but what unites us is a mutual belief that form carries memory - and that memory, when shared, becomes a kind of bridge.
